The disadvantages of UPVC windows and doors

Chris Blenhein 1

While uPVC (unplasticized polyvinyl chloride) windows and doors have gained popularity in recent years, they come with certain disadvantages that should be considered:

Limited Aesthetic Appeal: uPVC windows and doors often lack the natural warmth and beauty of timber or other materials. Their appearance can be perceived as plastic-like, which may not complement certain architectural styles or add the same level of elegance to a home.

Lower Durability: Over time, uPVC can become brittle and susceptible to cracking, particularly in extreme temperatures. Exposure to UV rays can cause color fading, and the material may deteriorate if not properly maintained. Repairs can be challenging and may require complete replacement rather than simple fixes.

Environmental Impact: uPVC is derived from non-renewable fossil fuels, making it less sustainable compared to timber or other eco-friendly materials. Its production and disposal can contribute to environmental pollution and waste.

Limited Design Options: uPVC windows and doors often offer limited design flexibility, restricting customization options. Standardized profiles may not cater to unique architectural requirements or personal preferences.

Less Insulation: While uPVC windows and doors can provide basic insulation, they may be less effective at retaining heat compared to timber or other materials with superior thermal properties. This could result in increased energy consumption and higher heating costs in colder climates.

Considering these disadvantages is crucial when choosing between uPVC and alternative materials for windows and doors. Carefully evaluating your specific needs and preferences will help determine the best option for your home.

Having a wooden front door1new ext door has many advantages, from improved insulation to increased security. A wooden door will also add beauty and value to your home. Here are some reasons why it is beneficial to have a wooden front door.

Increased Insulation
Wooden doors are more efficient than most other materials when it comes to insulating your home. This means that you will save on energy costs, as less of the conditioned air in your house will escape through the door. In addition, wooden doors are better at blocking outside noise than other materials such as aluminum or vinyl. So if you live in a noisy area, this can be an especially beneficial feature.

Aesthetics
A nicely designed wooden door adds beauty and style to any home. It is timeless, classic, and elegant which makes it popular with both buyers and sellers alike. The natural look of wood seamlessly complements any decor style — from rustic farmhouse to modern minimalism — adding sophistication no matter what the design scheme may be!

How Can Wooden Doors Be More Energy Efficient?

2Wooden doors can be energy efficient options as long as you choose the right type of wood and take a few simple steps to ensure optimal performance. By properly sealing, weather-proofing, and insulating your wooden door, you can save on energy costs while also having a beautiful, timeless entranceway to your home! Here are some tips on how to make your wooden door more energy efficient:

Choose the Right Wood
Different types of wood have different characteristics that affect their ability to insulate. Softwoods like pine or spruce provide good insulation but are not as strong as hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or teak. Hardwoods generally require less maintenance than softwoods and can last for decades when properly cared for!

Sealing & Weather-Proofing
It is important to seal any porous surfaces of the wooden door with an appropriate waterproofing agent in order to prevent moisture from entering. This helps reduce heat transfer and maintain better overall insulation. Additionally it is important to install weather-stripping around the entire edge of the frame in order to form an airtight seal and keep drafts out!

Proper Insulation
Including thermal insulation inside or outside of the door can help improve its efficiency even further by preventing the transfer of heat coming through or going out. This can help reduce energy costs significantly by decreasing heat loss in winter and keeping cooler air inside during summertime!

Additional Features
Depending on where you live & what type of climate you experience it may be beneficial to consider additional features such as storm doors or light blocking curtains that offer extra protection against extreme temperatures and strong winds/sunlight. These additional elements will give your wooden door an additional layer of insulation while also providing added security – making them an excellent choice if safety is a top priority!

Double and Triple Glazing
Double and triple glazing can provide a number of benefits to wooden doors. It is often used in colder climates to prevent heat from escaping and improve energy efficiency. These layers consist of two or three panes of glass, which are separated by an air pocket. This pocket acts as insulation, trapping the heat inside the room and reducing the amount of energy needed to maintain a comfortable temperature. The additional layers also help reduce noise transfer - making it ideal for loud urban areas or homes located near busy roads. Moreover, this type of glazing also provides extra structural integrity; protecting against damaging weather conditions like hail or debris!

Choosing the right Entrance Door and things to consider

Entrance doors are the first impression someone gets as they enter your property, they can be a very personal part of your home, showing the visitor what to expect. The Place you put your wreath at Christmas, happy birthday or celebration sign. Yes a front door is an important part of the property and needs to be chosen carefully.
The Strength and security are an important factor, as well as letter box, door furniture and the design style and finishing. An often overlooked area is the door frame, for security doors it can go beyond this with steels that lock in to the wall either side, while for most purposes you want a clean finish that enhances and compliments the existing property. You can see many examples of this along with fan windows and other glazing options shown on our doors page in our main website. While there are many timber choices we always suggest a hardwood timber not only is it more durable it has a much better resistance to warping than softwood and if treated and finished properly it can outlast most owners. We can offer a site survey and quotation offering you the right design to match your property.

Choosing an Entrance Door

As a joinery company we specialise in hardwood entrance doors.
there are many features to consider when choosing the design, and specification of your new door.
The type of wood :- for a natural look and finish you want a variety with an attractive grain, if you're after a wooden door painted then going for the strongest variety will be important, we can advise you on this and have a selection of photos to show of the choices.

Door Furniture :- locks, hinges, letter Box, handles, peep hole, there are many things to consider here, available in chrome, bronze and other varieties this will play an important part in how the door looks and its security.

Glazing :- A door can be a very personal statement about the home the other side, the first thing your visitors see, some choose side light glazing or over the door glazing, you may choose to having  a glazing feature in the door itself or none at all. We have many years of experience in door design to match your house style and with photos of work examples you can be sure of your choice before getting your door made.

Insulation :- An obvious point that can be overlooked, this is an important aspect of external entrance doors, all our doors do include insulation to a high specification although we can offer higher levels of door insulation in the door manufacturer when we make your quote on request.

Security :- Entrance doors should have high quality locks and hinges to provide protection from break in attempts. Its also important to consider having a steel inserted into the door, this would strengthen the door, although doors can be made very strong within a hardwood design, having an internal steel support or structure to the door will make it that extra secure providing peace of mind, that you're protected when you need it most.
